Spotlight on...making hydropower work for communities and investors

Large dams transform the way that local people in developing countries access and use water. Water mobilisation can underpin, or undermine, local livelihoods strategies. IIED is engaged in a broad programme of research and policy work on bridging national and local development objectives through the sharing of benefits derived from water resources mobilisation by large dams.

We have just published three new publications based on this work; a discussion paper looking at the business case for bilateral support to improve sustainability of private sector hydropower and two new briefing papers; Managing the environmental and social risks of hydropower and Routing revenue from hydropower dams to deliver local development.

New publications this month

The relationship between development finance and climate finance is a key political issue. Some, particularly least developed country (LDC) climate negotiators, stress the differences. Others - most bilateral development agencies - stress the similarities. But understanding this relationship has now become urgent. Download our new discussion paper, Development finance and climate finance: achieving zero poverty and zero emissions which explores these issues.

Increasing urbanisation and the accompanying changes in land-use patterns are leading to a silent crisis through the destruction of ecosystems and the services they provide to support the poor, as well as affecting the resilience of urban areas. Using the example of Gorakhpur City, a new paper, Wheezing ecosystems, livelihood services and climate change resilience in Uttar Pradesh, argues that not following basic ecosystem-based approaches to development can be detrimental for both populations and the ecosystem itself.
